A Century of Hawthorn Football Club Legacy
This year marks a momentous milestone for the Hawthorn Football Club—100 years of incredible history, triumphs, and legends. For Darren Mort and his family, this celebration is more than just a chapter in the club’s rich legacy. It’s a story that runs deep in their blood.

Generations of Hawthorn Pride
Darren’s grandfather, Harry Mort, played for Hawthorn in its early days, running onto the field in 1925 as part of the club’s first side. Decades later, Darren’s father, Ian Mort, donned the brown and gold to play in the club’s first premiership team in 1961. Reflecting on their paths, Darren is struck by how their journeys, especially his father’s, have shaped him.
Ian Mort: A Role Model and Legend
Ian Mort was more than just an incredible footballer; he was Darren’s role model. He taught Darren strength, focus, and determination—qualities that undoubtedly made him the star athlete he was. These same traits have guided Darren through life’s challenges and triumphs, much like Ian’s ability to overcome and celebrate on the footy field. His legacy is one Darren carries with pride and gratitude.

The Journey to Hawthorn
Born on April 4, 1937, Ian Mort’s journey to Hawthorn started at Kew Amateurs before he became part of the Club in 1960. Standing tall at 187cm and built like a tank, he was known for his fierce determination and ability to inspire his teammates. Between 1960 and 1964, Ian played 73 games, kicked 56 goals, and earned his place as a premiership player in 1961. His tenacity also saw him crowned Hawthorn’s Most Consistent Player in 1962.
Moments of Grit and Toughness
One of the most vivid stories of Ian’s grit and toughness comes from a clash against St Kilda. Graham Arthur described him as someone who attacked the ball—and his opponents—with ferocity. In a rematch with St Kilda’s Eric Guy, Ian’s powerful game left a lasting impression, earning him respect and admiration from his teammates. Moments like these encapsulate the passion he had for the game and the impact he had on those around him.
Continuing the Legacy
After his time at Hawthorn, Ian continued to make his mark as a playing coach for Vermont, leading them to a thrilling EDFL Grand Final victory in 1967. Even off the Hawthorn field, his passion for footy never wavered.
A Lasting Impact
Ian Mort passed away on January 23, 1996, but his legacy lives on—not only as a premiership player for the Hawks but as a man whose strength, focus, and determination continue to inspire Darren. As Hawthorn celebrates its centenary, Darren is reminded of the role his family has played in the club’s journey, and he feels immense pride in being part of this incredible history.
A Tribute to Perseverance and Victory
Thank you, Ian Mort, for showing what it means to persevere, to celebrate victories, and to leave a mark on the world. Your legacy is a cornerstone of Hawthorn’s 100-year celebration.
